A Year to Remember – My Journey through the World of Connectivity

By Camilla Formica

Looking back on 2024 and early 2025, this chapter has been nothing short of extraordinary—not just for the cable and broadband industry, but for me personally. From Europe to the U.S., I’ve journeyed across continents, immersed in conversations that are shaping the future of connectivity. If there were a “Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?” for broadband, I might have been its headline act. Along the way (and in February alone I traveled 17,000 miles), I’ve witnessed incredible innovation, built meaningful relationships, and experienced unforgettable moments that reminded me why I love this industry.

ANGA COM

The Future of Broadband Unfolds

My travels began in Cologne, Germany, at ANGA COM, one of Europe’s most anticipated broadband exhibitions. The air felt electric, conversations buzzed around fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) breakthroughs, AI-powered network optimization, and infrastructure built for tomorrow’s needs. While the technology inspired awe, it was the human connection—the visionaries, engineers, and strategists—that left the deepest impression. And of course, Cologne’s awe-inspiring cathedral provided a perfect backdrop for a moment of reflection. I’m already looking forward to the 2025 event, where The Cable Center will be moderating two panels on June 4th.

Mobile World Congress 2025

The Convergence of Connectivity

Next stop: Barcelona, for Mobile World Congress. There, I saw firsthand how fiber and wireless technologies are blending into one seamless experience. Private 5G networks and AI-fueled optimization are no longer future concepts—they’re here, quietly revolutionizing how we live and work. What struck me most was the emphasis on redefining the user experience—not just delivering speed, but enhancing lives. The conversations were a powerful reminder that our industry’s purpose is rooted in connecting people in deeper, more meaningful ways.

The Independent Show

A Nashville Experience

August brought me to Nashville for The Independent Show, hosted by the National Content & Technology Cooperative. This event had heart. From thought-provoking sessions to industry awards and even a little singing (when in Nashville…), the energy was contagious. The Cable Center had the chance to record oral histories and celebrate the community that makes our industry what it is. It was both grounding and energizing.

IBC

A Global Perspective on Media and Broadband

From Colorado to Amsterdam, IBC delivered a sweeping view of the media and broadband convergence. Discussions on AI-driven personalization and predictive analytics were illuminating, but it was Thimon De Jong’s keynote on future human behavior that truly moved me. His message challenged us to lead with empathy and vision in an age of constant change. It was a call to action—and one I’ve carried with me into 2025. Join us in 2025 for an incredible conversation from women across the industry. We will be joined by our partners at The WICT Network.

SCTE TechExpo

Bridging Innovation and Inclusion

Back in the U.S., SCTE TechExpo in Atlanta brought together experts to explore the future of network engineering. At this dynamic event, we hosted two standout panels. The depth of discussion and honesty from our panelists made these some of the most talked-about sessions of the week. One focused on bridging the gap between network engineering and customer experience—an essential conversation about aligning technical innovation with end-user needs. The other brought together an inspiring panel of women leaders who explored the different generational perspectives of women in our industry. These discussions didn’t just inform—they sparked new connections and ideas about how we can shape the future of broadband together.

Diversity Week NYC

Championing Inclusion

Diversity Week in New York City was a powerful reminder that technology is only as strong as the people behind it. Sessions on equity, leadership, and representation sparked important dialogue. Listening to voices like Siri Chulazi and Carla Harris reminded me that creating space for every voice isn’t just good business—it’s essential to true innovation.

Network X Paris

Why AI Needs Strategy, Structure, and Leadership to Thrive

This past fall, I traveled to Paris for Network X and participated in an insightful AI Monetization Round Table. Cultural friction, scalability hurdles, regulatory blockers, and consumer confusion remain key challenges to AI adoption—exacerbated by a lack of clear strategy. For AI to truly thrive, we need leadership that offers top-down frameworks and executive-level education to drive transformation.

Society for Broadband Professionals

Building Global Bridges

It was an incredible week in the UK, starting with a visit to Liberty Global’s Hammersmith offices to meet with Madalina Suceveanu. We also spent time with board member Paul Broadhurst and his team before enjoying the warmth of a small-town British pub. One standout moment was dinner at one of my favorite Italian spots in Knightsbridge, Sale e Pepe, with Lauren and Mark Trudeau of OpenVault. The Society for Broadband Professionals anniversary gala at Lincoln’s Inn was truly magical—an evening of awards, dancing, and celebration in one of the most historic venues imaginable. A casual stroll through the Victoria and Albert Museum and peaceful walks through Kensington rounded out a great trip. In just 13 days, I logged 58 miles on foot, returning home full of insights, inspiration, and gratitude. Join me in June 2025 for the Letters from America sessions where The Cable Center will share insights from “across the pond.”

NCTC Winter Education Conference

A Bold Commitment to Innovation

Reflecting NCTC’s bold commitment to innovation and progress. NCTC’s Annual Winter Education Conference in Atlanta was an energizing start to 2025. This event is always a highlight, offering dynamic educational forums and invaluable networking with fellow industry professionals. Unsurprisingly, AI and its transformative potential stole the spotlight—sparking conversations on its groundbreaking applications and the possibilities ahead. We also gained exclusive updates on NCTC’s key initiatives, including exciting advancements in MVNO partnerships and the Broadband TV project.

CableLabs Winter Conference

The Power of Innovation

In Orlando, the CableLabs Winter Conference brought the future into focus. From 10G deployments to sustainability in broadband infrastructure, every session offered insights that left me both excited and a little in awe. This wasn’t just about technical progress—it was about the role innovation plays in creating a more resilient, accessible, and sustainable world.

Cable Hall of Fame

Honoring the Industry’s Greatest

One of the year’s most emotional nights was the Cable Hall of Fame, where we honored legends who built the foundation we stand on as well as new innovators who are blazing an intrapreneurial path. Their stories reminded me that legacy and innovation aren’t opposites, rather, partners in progress. It was a moment of deep gratitude—to those who paved the way, and to those now carrying the torch. Sharing that evening with so many industry friends made it all the more meaningful.

Adaptive Spirit

Connecting for a Cause

Of all the events I attended, Adaptive Spirit touched my heart the most. Coming together to support U.S. Paralympic Winter Sports teams while forging connections across our industry brought joy and purpose into sharp focus. It was a beautiful intersection of passion, philanthropy, and community.

Looking Ahead

As I look back, I’m overwhelmed with gratitude—for the people I’ve met, the ideas I’ve encountered, and the collective passion driving this industry forward. The journey was filled with innovation, collaboration, and humanity. Let’s carry that momentum boldly into the future. If you’re wondering where I’ll be in the the coming months, just follow the conversations that are shaping the future of broadband. Let’s keep building—together.
