The City of Brotherly Broadband

By Mark Duzban

Well, we did it! After two years of virtual events, SCTE® Cable-Tec Expo® reunited the industry, eclipsing attendance from our last in-person event in 2019, as the world of broadband descended on Philadelphia for four magical days in September. And the energy was electric!

By combining forces with CableLabs, we have united the cable industry’s two largest membership organizations. Together we are contributing to the industry’s success while supporting the accelerated pace of change, which was on display at Expo 2022. The wide array of transformative technologies and volume of thought leadership were unparalleled. Attendees were lined up for demos and technical sessions, alike. Exhibitors were appreciated with an inaugural breakfast event that was filled to capacity, and speakers and award winners were applauded by a live audience that was at times standing room only. The buzz in the air was constant, discussions about collaboration were everywhere, and deals were made.

Lots to cover coming out of Expo. 10G Avenue made its debut, with a red carpet leading to center stage at the Innovation Theater. The 10G Challenge winners were announced, and CableLabs Vice President of Wired Technologies Curtis Knittle showcases the winners for us in this issue.

Brian Dietz, Senior Vice President, Strategic Communications for NCTA — The Internet & Television Association, dives deeper into the future of the Internet by exploring “Four Ways that 10G Will Revolutionize Our Lives.”

Also in this issue, Kyrio President & CEO Ike Elliott provides an introduction into adaptive route control and automated testing, sharing how they can help operators achieve higher reliability, and better customer experiences.

Keeping pace with innovation is never easy. That’s why SCTE relies on working groups to assemble some of the smartest minds in the industry to develop standards, which help to democratize technical advancement and keep our industry moving forward. Be sure to take an inside look at “Building Better Connections Through Network and Service Reliability and DOCSIS 4.0 Tools” in the piece contributed by the leaders of those two new groups, SCTE’s Dean Stoneback, Senior Director of Engineering and Standards, and Derek DiGiacomo, Senior Director, Energy Management Programs and Business Continuity.

You better believe work is already underway to plan for a return to Denver, CO for Expo 2023. Please save the dates, so we can come together again October 16-19 next year where we will continue to grow our incredible community in collaboration with CableLabs, and please continue ‘creating infinite possibilities’ until then.
