A Smarter Way to Build Broadband

I’ve spent enough years around broadband builds to know that the technology is almost never what sinks a project. It’s the coordination. Or the lack of it.

Think about how a typical fiber build comes together. One firm runs the market study. A design house picks it up from there. Aerial and underground go to different crews. Equipment comes from a distributor, gets staged by somebody else, then a separate contractor stands up the NOC once it’s live. On paper it looks like a plan. In the field, every one of those handoffs is a seam, a place where data gets re-keyed, dates slip, and nobody’s quite sure who owns the problem. I’ve stood on plenty of job sites where the schedule was slipping, the budget was bleeding, and the loudest sound in the room was everyone pointing at someone else.

AMT has watched this movie for more than 40 years, across cable operators, telcos, electric co-ops, and independent ISPs. With BEAD now pushing record build volume into every state, those seams are splitting wider than I’ve ever seen. That’s the whole reason we built the Broadband Deployment Network: to take that pile of vendors and replace it with one partner who actually owns the outcome.

The idea isn’t complicated. We don’t just ship you a box and wish you luck. We help you decide where to build, design it, construct it, and stand behind it once it’s running. One contract. One team. One number to call.

Here’s what that looks like in practice. We start with data instead of a hunch. Before a dollar gets committed, we’re scoring the market at the address level, modeling the returns, and flagging overbuild risk. We’re mapping the geology four to six feet down, because the trench is where good economics go to die when nobody checked first. Operators who start this way tend to reach market about 40% faster and hit far fewer expensive surprises.

From there we get eyes on the actual plant. Using aerial imagery and LiDAR, we capture the poles, manholes, vegetation, and conflict zones, then build a digital twin of the route maybe seven times faster than walking it, with accuracy north of 98%. That feeds straight into engineering, where it becomes permit-ready prints, splice diagrams, and pole-loading analysis, cutting design-to-permit time roughly in half.

Then comes the part AMT has been doing longest: getting the right material to the right place. We pull from more than 100 OEM relationships, keep it BEAD-ready and BABA-compliant, and kit and stage it so a crew shows up on day one and the gear is already there. The construction follows—aerial, underground, HFC upgrades, FTTH—scaled to as many crews as the job needs, with our people managing the program and checking the work. Once it’s live, our U.S.-based NOC watches it around the clock.

What makes this work is that nothing falls through the cracks between phases. The market study shapes the design, the design builds the materials list, the list drives what we stage, and the staged gear meets the crew. Nobody’s re-typing somebody else’s work. That’s where the schedule gets saved.

Builds are happening faster and bigger right now than at any point I can remember. The operators who come out stronger will be the ones who spent their time on customers and coverage instead of refereeing nine vendors. That’s the weight we’re trying to take off their plate: to make the build easy, on time, and on budget, so they can get back to growing.

Craig has 26 years of cable TV experience in both sales and engineering. Craig is currently an Engineering Fellow at Advanced Media Technologies (AMT) and functions as a customer-facing technologist. Before working at AMT, Craig was a Sales Director and Access Specialist for CommScope, Arris, and Motorola for over 10 years. Prior to working at Motorola, Craig held various engineering positions at both Adelphia and TWC, with his last four years at TWC working as a Senior Director & VP of Engineering. Craig has significant experience architecting and managing large-scale networks and was a technical white paper author at Arris. Craig has an MBA and is currently all but dissertation in his Doctor of Management, Information Systems and Technology program.
